ERBIL — At least three Iraqi soldiers were killed on Monday in an explosion that hit an army convoy in south of Kirkuk, local officials said.
Daquq Mayor Luis Fandi told BasNews that another soldier sustained injuries in the incident which took place near Abu Shahab village of Daquq district.
Initial reports said the IED was left from the war between the Iraqi forces and the Islamic State (IS) between 2014 and 2017.
It comes amid concerns over the growing Islamic State (IS) attacks in Iraq and Syria. The extremist group targeted a headquarters of the army last week in Diyala and killed 12 soldiers.
Meanwhile, IS militants in the Syrian Kurdish city of Hasakah are targeting a prison for the fourth successive day in an attempt to free the IS detainees.
The chaos led the Iraqi government and Kurdistan Region to strengthen security measures along the border in order to ward off any possible threat coming from the jihadist group.
