ERBIL — Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi on Thursday ordered an investigation into the attack on the office of Kurdish Deputy Speaker of Iraqi Parliament in Kirkuk province.
The incident was reported on Wednesday night in Kirkuk's Rahimawa neighborhood where unidentified assailants targeted the office of Shakhawan Abdullah.
Kadhimi's office said in a statement that the premier tasked relevant authorities to begin an investigation into the issue and find the perpetrators behind the bomb attack.
During a phone call with Abdullah, the prime minister also denounced the "terrorist" attack, the statement added.
The Barzani Headquarters and Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) last night condemned the attack on Abdullah's office and called on the federal government to ensure the safety of all citizens in the country "equally".
As a candidate for the KDP, Abdullah, who is from Kirkuk province, became the most popular Kurdish representative after receiving over 37,000 votes in the last Iraqi parliamentary elections held in October 2021.
Last Thursday, the representation office of the KDP in Baghdad came under attack while a party official survived an assassination attempt in the capital city.
Following Wednesday's incident, Iraq's Shia cleric and the leader of Sadrist Movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, criticized the militias behind the recent increasing political violence in the country, and called on security forces to find the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
Sadr noted that the factions who lost in the last parliamentary elections could be behind the recent repeated attacks on political figures and their offices.
