Body of Prominent Yezidi Figure Sheikh Shamo Returned to Kurdistan

ERBIL — The body of Sheikh Shamo, a prominent Yezidi figure who died earlier this week from COVID-19 complications, was returned to the Kurdistan Region on Thursday.

Prime Minister Masrour Barzani attended a ceremony at Erbil International Airport to honor the Yezidi official, who also served as the advisor to the prime minister for Yezidi affairs.

Shamo was also the head of Lalish Cultural Center. He died at a hospital in Ankara nearly three weeks after he had contracted COVID-19. He was transferred from Erbil to the Turkish capital on a private plane on 10 January after his health condition had deteriorated.

In an official statement earlier, PM Barzani offered condolences to the Yezidis and underlined his role in consolidating tolerance and peaceful coexistence among communities in Kurdistan.
