ERBIL — A Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) official survived an assassination attempt in the Iraqi capital, local security sources confirmed.
An unspecified number of armed men opened fire at a vehicle carrying Mahdi Abdulkarim Fayli on Qanat Al-Jaish road, east of Baghdad, Shafaq News cited an anonymous security source.
Fayili was unharmed but bullets damaged his car.
This is the second attack targeting the KDP and its members in the Iraqi capital within the past 24 hours alone.
Late on Thursday, KDP's Baghdad Headquarters was attack with hand grenades which resulted in material damage only. The perpetrators managed to escape and police said it was investigating the incident.
Meanwhile, a rocket attack last night targeted the US Embassy in the fortified Green Zone and injured two civilians, a woman and a child. It was followed by two other attacks the same night which targeted the offices of Azim Party and Taqaddum Party. The latter is the political party of the Iraqi Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi.
The rise in the attacks on political entities comes amid tensions over the formation of the new government of Iraq.
