Maliki to Visit Erbil amid Iraqi Government Formation Talks

ERBIL — The leader of State of Law Coalition, Nouri al-Maliki, will visit Erbil on Wednesday where he is expected to discuss the formation of new Iraqi government with the Kurdish leaders.

According to the information obtained by BasNews, Maliki will lead a delegation of the Coordination Framework, a political group consisting of Shia factions unpleased about the results of the October parliamentary elections.

Iraqi factions have already begun efforts to form a majority coalition to form the new government despite many challenges still ahead, including disputes over the election results.

On 30 November, Iraq’s Independent High Electoral Commission submitted the election results to the Iraqi Supreme Federal Court for certification.

However, some Shia factions, especially those with closer links to Iran, have already stated that they would reject the results for alleged fraud during the voting and counting procedures.

The Sadrist Movement, led by influential Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, has won 73 seats and it is expected to led the formation of the new government after having a figure nominated for the position of the prime minister.
