ERBIL — A court in Iraq has sentenced eight members of al-Qaeda to death, a security source said on Tuesday.
The death penalties were reportedly issued by the criminal court in Dhi Qar province in accordance with Article 4 of the Anti-Terrorism Law, the source confirmed to Shafaq News.
The eight members had reportedly launched an armed attack on a security checkpoint in the vicinity of the capital Baghdad which killed and wounded several people, the source added.
Iraq is one of the countries that still impliments death penalties. Scores of people, the majority of whom were Islamic State (IS) members, have been sentenced to death in Iraq over the past few years.
Earlier in June this year, an Iraqi court sentenced 13 IS members after they confessed involvement in terrorist activities in the country.
Around two months later, a member of the Iraqi Parliament revealed that 7,900 inmates were given death penalties by the country’s judicial authorities, and they are remaining on the death row after years since their conviction.
According to unofficial reports, the majority of people sentenced to death in Iraq are those involved in acts of terrorism and membership in the Islamic State.
