Seven Civilians Killed in Second Attack in Iraq’s Diyala

ERBIL — A second village was attacked early morning on Wednesday by a group of armed men in Iraq’s eastern province of Diyala, leaving at least seven civilians killed.

The attack targeted the village of Nahir Imam near Rashad suburb of Diyala, where the assailants also set fire to a farm and several vehicles.

The attack came after the Islamic State (IS) militants targeted another village in the area, killing 12 civilians and wounding at least 15 others.

Local sources said the first attack took place while a group of villagers were on their way to deliver ransom to free three people previously abducted by IS.

However, it is not yet clear if the second attack was also carried out by the Islamic State (IS).

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani and Prime Minister Masrour Barzani have issued separate statements to condemn the attack.
“ISIS remains a threat to regional peace and coexistence and requires a collective, regional response,” PM Masrour Barzani said after offering condolences to the families of the victims.

Iraqi PM Mustafa Al-Kadhimi has vowed not let the attack go unpunished.
