Iraq Willing to Enhance Economic Ties with Lebanon: Kadhimi

ERBIL — Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi on Monday received his Lebanese counterpart Najib Mikati in the capital Baghdad where the Iraqi premier expressed his government's willingness to enhance economic ties with Lebanon.

Kadhimi's office said in a press release that the two leaders exchanged views on the issues of common interests between the two countries.

"The meeting discussed ways to enhance cooperation between Iraq and Lebanon, and coordinate bilateral positions regarding regional and international issues," reads the press release.

The Iraqi Prime Minister highlighted the importance of deepening relations between Iraq and Lebanon, noting that Iraq is looking forward to enhancing economic, trade, security, and military cooperations.

Mikati, in return, commended Iraq's support for Lebanese people and the government's steps to promote peace in the region through dialogue between the regional countries.

This comes a few weeks after Iraq and Lebanon signed an agreement that stipulates selling one million tons of heavy fuel oil at international prices to Beirut, in exchange for services and goods.

Kadhimi's office reported in a separate press release that the Iraqi prime minister on Monday received a phone call from his Spanish counterpart Pedro Sánchez, explaining that the pair "discussed means of enhancing cooperation between Iraq and Spain in the sectors of security, economy, industry, culture, and investment, as well as combating terrorism and the roots of extremism."
