SDF Arrests Tens of Young Men in Hassaka

ERBIL — The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on Saturday arrested several dozens of young men in the Syrian Kurdish city of Hassaka, northeast of Syria.

Local sources said at least 20 people were arrested in Dawar Marsho countryside of Hassaka while dozens of others were taken away by the SDF forces in the center of the city.

The young men are believed to have been arrested for refusing to join the compulsory service SDF has introduced in the Kurdish areas in controls.

The SDF, a mainly Kurdish armed group backed by the US for the war against the Islamic State (IS), is also widely criticized for its close ties with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

International organizations also blame the PKK and its offsprings for recruiting children under 18 and training them in military camps to be sent to battlegrounds, mainly in the areas where the armed group is fighting the Turkish army.
