PM Barzani, UK Envoy Discuss Peshmerga Reforms, Sinjar Deal

ERBIL — Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Thursday received UK Ambassador to Iraq Mark Bryson in Erbil where they discussed the reforms within the Peshmerga Ministry and the deal between Erbil and Baghdad on Sinjar.

A press release by Barzani's office said that the two sides also exchanged views on post-election Iraq and the Kurdistan Region’s relationship with the United Kingdom.

"The Premier hoped the election results will help the stability in Iraq and ease the problems between Erbil and Baghdad," the press release added

In addition to the ongoing reforms within the Ministry of Peshmerga, the threat of terrorism in the region and the deal between the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the federal government of Iraq to normalize the situation in Sinjar to pave the way for the displaced people to return to their hometowns.

The KRG and Baghdad in October 2020 announced an agreement to normalize the situation in Sinjar, based on which all armed groups should withdraw from the Yezidi majority populated region.

However, the pro-Iran militia groups and the Kurdistan Worker's Party (PKK) have so far refused to leave Sinjar under any circumstances.

Thousands of Yezidis were displaced when the Islamic State (IS) attacked Sinjar back in August 2014, the majority of whom still hesitate to return to their places of origin due to the deteriorated situation in the region.
