IS Remains a Clear Threat: US-led Coalition

PM Barzani highlighted the importance of continued Erbil-Baghdad military cooperation against IS

ERBIL — The Islamic State (IS) has so far remained a clear threat in the region, a commander of the US-led Coalition forces warned during a meeting with the Prime Minister of Kurdistan Region, Masrour Barzani, on Sunday.

The premier's office said in a press release that Barzani on Sunday received Major General John Brennan, coalition forces commander for Iraq and Syria, exchanging views on various topics.

"Prime Minister Barzani thanked the coalition for its support, emphasizing the importance of continued cooperation between Peshmerga and Iraqi forces in tackling terrorism," the press release added.

The Coalition commander, in return, reaffirmed that the Global Coalition will continue to support the Kurdistan Region's Peshmerga forces in the fight against the Islamic State in the region.

"The General reiterated coalition support for the Peshmerga’s fight against Islamic State (ISIS)," the press release said, pointing out Brennan further noted that "ISIS remains a clear threat."

Iraq in 2017 announced that the Islamic State had been "fully defeated" while the jihadist group as so far continued to carry out terrorist activities in most parts of the country, particularly in the areas disputed between Erbil and Baghdad.

Top Kurdish leaders have repeatedly called for closer military cooperations between Erbil and Baghdad in the disputed territories to ensure the Islamic State would have no chances of resurgence, as the insurgent group still poses a serious threat to the security forces and civilians in the region.
