ERBIL — Islamic State (IS) militants executed a civilian they had kidnapped a week ago in south of Kirkuk, a local official confirmed on Sunday.
Adnan Khalaf Qadir, in his early 60s, was a resident of Daquq district whom the IS militants kidnapped last Monday in an area near Rashad, Daquq Mayor Luis Afandi told BasNews.
His body was found outside Rashad on October 17, a week after he was abducted, Afandi added.
It was not clear if Qadir’s family were contacted by the insurgents for ransom as they previously did in other cases of abduction in the region.
Despite a territorial defeat in 2017, the IS remnants remain the main security threats in north and west of Iraq. They operate in small groups resorting to insurgency war to challenge the stability of the area.
Kirkuk and other disputed Kurdish territories are among the most challenged areas. Erbil and Baghdad are now working to establish joint brigades for securing these territories and address what the Kurds call “a security vacuum” created by the Iraqi forces.
