ERBIL — The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) will recognize the uncertified official results of Iraq’s early elections announced on Sunday by the Independent High Electoral Commission, an official said.
The KDP secured 33 seats at the next Iraqi Parliament to become the largest Kurdish party and the fifth among all electoral factions across Iraq.
Hawar Mohammed, head of the legal department at KDP’s Election Institute, said his party had submitted 26 complaints of irregularities to the IHEC, and it could save one more seat in Nineveh province.
With a total of 33 seats, the KDP will recognize the official elections results, he added.
According to the IHEC, the Sadrist Movement, led by populist Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, has won the largest number of seats. The movement now has 73 seats and it is expected to form a coalition at the next parliament to kickoff the establishment of the new government in Baghdad.
In Kurdistan, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), which was running for parliament in a coalition with the Change Movement (Gorran), has won 16 seats to maintain its position as the second largest Kurdish political party.
