ERBIL — Iraq's Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) on Monday evening announced the official preliminary results of the parliamentary elections held yesterday across the country.
The preliminary results indicate that the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) has won 32 seats, followed by the Kurdistan Coalition with 17 seats, and the New Generation which has secured nine seats of the future parliament.
According to the Iraqi electoral commission, Kurdistan Islamic Union (KIU) has won a couple of seats and Kurdistan Justice Group (Komal) has won one seat.
The KDP secured 11 seats in Erbil, nine seats in Nineveh, eight seats in Duhok, two in Sulaimaniya, and two in Kirkuk provinces, while Kurdistan Coalition has won eight seats in Sulaimaniya, three seats in Kirkuk, two seats in Nineveh, and four seats in Duhok, Erbil, Salahaddin, and Diyala provinces.
The New Generation movement has won five seats in Sulaimaniya, three seats in Erbil, and one in Kirkuk provinces, followed by the KIU which secured two seats in Duhok and two seats in Sulaimaniya provinces, with Komal winning only one seat in Sulaimaniya.
Polling stations were opened in Iraq on Sunday morning to allow more than 24 million eligible citizens to cast their votes and choose a representative for the future Iraqi parliament.
