ERBIL — An Iraqi national is among those students who were injured in a shooting incident at a university in the Russian city of Perm on Monday where several people were either killed or wounded.
On Monday morning, a gunman raided Perm State University and started shooting at people randomly, killing six individuals and wounding 28 others. The university's press service told Reuters that the suspect was in his teens.
Ahmed al-Sahaf, a spokesperson for Iraq's Foreign Ministry, said in a statement on Monday that "we are closely following the status of the Iraqi student who was shot in Perm University in Moscow in the designated terrorist attack via our embassy."
"We are communicating with the authorities there to obtain first-hand information about his health status," the spokesperson said.
Although the suspect had claimed that he had no specific intentions for the attack, and that he did not belong to any terrorist organizations, the Iraqi government believes that the incident was a "terrorist attack."
A video footage showed people jumping from first-floor windows to escape the facility as the suspect had been attempting to enter the classrooms and hurt the individuals.
"On Monday, an unidentified person entered the university building and opened fire," a source told TASS.
"Some students locked themselves in the university's auditoriums to hide from the attacker. Some students jumped out of the windows. Law enforcement agents are heading to the site."
