ERBIL — Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani has expressed his hopes for a fraud and violence-free Iraqi election which is scheduled for October, next month, a statement said on Saturday.
The Kurdish prime minister on Saturday received Viola von Cramon, head of the European Union’s Election Observation Mission, in Erbil where Cramon reminded that the role of the EU is to observe the elections and not to intervene.
A statement by Barzani's office said that the Kurdish premier "praised EU’s role and hoped for a fraud and violence-free election, especially in the disputed territories." "He also expressed KRG’s readiness to support and cooperate with the mission."
Barzani wrote on Twitter: "Constructive exchange with @ViolavonCramon, EU's Chief Observer for the Iraqi elections. We reviewed their important mission of observing the Iraqi parliamentary elections."
"I appreciated the EU's important role and called for fair, inclusive and credible elections."
The Kurdish prime minister also reaffirmed his governments readiness for any cooperations with the EU during the electoral process, according to the statement.
The Iraqi parliamentary elections are scheduled for 10 October 2021 while the political parties have begun the election campaigns across the country, including Iraq.
Hundreds of international observers, including from the United Nations and European Union, are expected to monitor the parliamentary vote held in the country to prevent possible irregularities and fraud.
