ERBIL — A senior leader of the Kurdistan Worker's Party (PKK) was assassinated by unidentified armed men in Kurdistan Region's Sulaimaniya province on Friday, local police has confirmed.
According to the information BasNews has obtained, unknown gunmen opened fire at Yasin Bullut, known as Shukri Sarhat, in Chwarchra neighborhood of Sulaimaniya city, killing him instantly
The incident reportedly took place at around 9:00 am, local time, local media outlets said, adding that Sarhat was 65 years old and he was a member of the PKK Martyrs Committee and that he was shot four times.
Speaking to BasNews on condition of anonymity, a source from Sulaimaniya Police confirmed the report and pointed out that pistols were used in the attack, noting that his body was transferred to the forensic science department.
The assassination was soon condemned by Kurdistan Region Deputy Prime Minister Qaubad Talabani who also urged the security forces to find the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
No sides have so far claimed responsibility for the killing of the PKK leader, with no further details currently available on the incident either.
