ERBIL — Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani on Thursday congratulated the Kurdish-British Politician Nadhim Zahawi on his appointment as UK’s new Secretary of State for Education.
The 54-year-old politician and member of the Conservative Party previously served as the member of parliament and in several other governmental positions.
“Congratulations to my friend Nadhim Zahawi on his appointment as the British Secretary of State for Education. I wish him success with his new position,” Barzani wrote on Twitter.
“I’m proud to see Nadhim, a native Kurd, continue his successful political career in the United Kingdom,” he added.
Zahawi leaves his previous post as the minister responsible for the Covid vaccines roll-out, to replace Gavin Williamson in UK’s Cabinet reshuffle.
Zahawi, who has previously been a junior education minister, was born in the Kurdistan Region. His family moved to the UK in 1976 when he was aged nine, and has attended independent schools in London and then studied chemical engineering at University College London.
Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani also conveyed congratulations during a phone call he led with the new British Education Secretary on Wednesday.
“We are proud of his work as Vaccine Minister for the UK and beyond,” PM Barzani wrote on Twitter later.
