PM Barzani Congratulates UK's New Education and Foreign Secretaries

ERBIL — Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani has offered congratulations to Nadhim Zahawi on his appointment as UK's new Secretary of Education.

The Kurdish prime minister wrote on Twitter on Wednesday: "I spoke by phone tonight to congratulate my friend Kak @nadhimzahawi for his appointment as the new Education Secretary."

Zahawi was announced earlier the day to have been appointed as the UK's new Secretary of Education, replacing former Secretary Gavin Williamson.

Nadhim Zahawi, who is a British-Kurdish politician, also served as the Minister for Business and Industry and COVID-19 Vaccine Development, was promoted by Prime Minister Boris Johnson after winning plaudits over the efficient and fuss-free COVID-19 vaccine program.

Prime Minister Barzani, in his Twitter statement, added that "we are proud of his work as Vaccine Minister for the UK and beyond."

He also offered congratulations to Liz Truss after she was appointed as the new Foreign Secretary, expressing willingness to work with her on "shared interests."

"I congratulate @trussliz on her appointment as the UK’s new Foreign Secretary. I look forward to working closely with her on shared interests, including regional stability," Barzani said in a statement on Twitter.

The Kurdistan Region and United Kingdom enjoy strong bilateral relations while the country has been providing the autonomous region's Peshmerga forces with military assistance in the fight against the Islamic State (IS) over the past few years.

Earlier this week, PM Barzani received new UK Consul General to Erbil David Hunt, with both sides agreeing "to explore ways to work closer together and elevate bilateral relations," his office said in a statement at the time.

The prime minister also welcomed opportunities for London to assist Kurdistan Regional Government's (KRG) reform agenda, notably within the Ministry of Peshmerga.
