ERBIL — Kurdistan Region’s Directorate of Counter-Terrorism on Sunday announced the arrest of a man suspected of being involved in the planning of the recent deadly suicide bombing in Baghdad.
On July 19, a suicide bomber detonated his explosive vest at a busy market in Sadr City of eastern Baghdad, killing 35 and injuring many more. The attack was later claimed by the Islamic State (IS).
Iraqi forces previously arrested a group of three over the attack. Kurdistan Region’s Counter-Terrorism Unit said in a statement that Baghdad had asked for cooperation to capture the fourth suspect.
“After investigations by the General Directorate of Counter-Terrorism of the Kurdistan Region, the wanted man was found and arrested,” reads the statement.
It identified the suspect with initials only, and said he was originally from Hawija district of Kirkuk province, found at Hassan Sham camp for IDPs.
