ERBIL — Islamic State (IS) militants on Saturday night attacked a convoy of the Iraqi Federal Police in Kirkuk, killing one officer.
Kirkuk Police Spokesperson Amir Nouri told BasNews that the insurgents targeted the police forces with sniper fire.
The IS militants managed to escape the area before being engaged by the government forces, Nouri added.
Kirkuk, a Kurdish province disputed between Erbil and Baghdad, remains one of the areas most challenged by the IS militants who regularly target the security forces and civilians.
Kurdish Peshmerga forces and the Iraqi Army have recently established a Joint Cooperation Center in Kirkuk’s K1 Base to address the security concerns in the province.
