Iran's Rouhani Inaugurates New Water Projects near Iraqi Borders

ERBIL - Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Thursday inaugurated a number of new water projects near the Iraqi borders.

The Iranian president inaugurated Kanjan dam in Ilam province and two irrigation projects in Ilam and Kermanshah provinces.

Iran has so far constructed five dams in Ilam province over the past few years, Mohammed al-Haji Rasouli, the General Secretary of the Water Resources Directorate, said in a statement.

The dam is 86 meters in height and has a capacity of 85 million cubic feet.

Around 35% of Iraq's annual water resources comes from Iranian rivers. Before Iran constructed the dams, Iraq used to receive the entirety of 42 shared rivers' flow.
