ERBIL - Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Wednesday met with his Belgian counterpart Alexander De Croo, during which the Kurdish premier thanked Belgium for its continued support for the Peshmerga forces.
The two leaders exchanged views on bilateral relations between the sides and the wide range of security obstacles being faced in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, Barzani's office said in a statement.
"Prime Minister Barzani expressed his gratitude for Belgium’s continued support and acknowledgement of Peshmerga forces as part of the global coalition in the war against ISIS."
The Kurdish premier also stressed the importance of cooperation between the Kurdistan Region and Iraq in this conflict, both sides agreeing on the importance of such mutually beneficial efforts.
Concerning the relations between Erbil and Baghdad, the Belgian prime minister addressed the necessity of resolving longstanding issues, and revealed that they are in touch with Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi over the matter.
"Prime Minister De Croo defined the Kurdistan Region as effective and lively, and expressed his country’s readiness to support the Kurdistan Region. He added that Belgium can be of particular help in the agriculture sector," the statement added.
Barzani and De Croo also discussed the Kurdistan Regional Government's (KRG) COVID-19 response and ongoing process of vaccination in the autonomous region, "including the distribution of vaccines among the displaced families in the region."
