Peshmerga, Iraqi Army Establish First Joint Operations Center in Khanaqin

ERBIL — Kurdistan Region’s Peshmerga Ministry and the Iraqi Army have established the first Joint Operations Center in the disputed Kurdish town of Khanaqin to address the security challenges in the area, an official said on Thursday.

The regional and federal governments had previously made an agreement to create four Joint Operations Centers to strengthen the military cooperation between Erbil and Baghdad and secure the disputed territories against the Islamic State (IS).

A Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) representative in Khanaqin said that a ten-member committee from both sides will coordinate the military operations in Khanaqin to further tighten the noose around the IS remnants in the area.

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) repeatedly warned against a security vacuum in the areas falling between the Peshmerga and Iraqi Army’s positions where the IS militants exploit to hide and organize terrorist attacks.
