Firefighters Save Crops from IS Deliberate Fire in a Kirkuk Village

ERBIL — Firefighters managed to control a massive fire before it could cause serious damage to the crops near a Kurdish village in the disputed province of Kirkuk, officials said on Monday.

Speaking to BasNews, Jawad Mohammed, a local representative of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), said there were evidences proving that the Islamic State (IS) militants were behind the fire in the village of Meshirfa of Dibis, north of Kirkuk.

Similar sabotage attacks burned thousands of acres in Iraq, especially in the disputed Kurdish areas, last year, some of which were blamed on the Arab families who wished to force the Kurds out of their lands.

Mohammed said the recent fire was by the IS militants, but it is due to the incapability of the Iraqi forces in protecting the farmers.
