Protesters Gather Outside Iranian Consulate in Karbala

ERBIL - Angry protesters on Sunday night gathered outside the Iranian Consulate in Iraq's Karbala following the assassination of another activist, attempting to raid the facility.

Iraqi reports said earlier the day that unidentified armed men on motorcycles assassinated Ihab Al Wazni, a prominent activist, outside his home overnight on Saturday in Karbala, south of capital Baghdad.

According to the information BasNews has obtained, Iraqi protesters surrounded the Iranian Consulate in Karbala and set fire to tyres in front of the building on Sunday night.

There were also unconfirmed reports claiming that the demonstrators set all entrances and the gate of the Iranian diplomatic building in Karbala on fire before they were dispersed by security forces.

Similar demonstrations were also organized in Babil, Diwaniya, Nasiriya, and Maysan, while people were also possible to take to the streets in Basra.

This comes as pro-Iran militia groups are suspected to be behind the assassinations of Iraqi protesters and civil activists.
