ERBIL — The Iraqi government has ordered the establishment of four joint operations centers with the Kurdistan Region in the disputed areas, a Peshmerga official said on Thursday.
The decision comes after a significant increase in terrorist attacks by the Islamic State (IS), mostly targeting the Iraqi security forces, army, and Hashd al-Shaabi militias.
Speaking to BasNews, Major General Qaraman Kamal, deputy chief of staff for trainings at the Peshmerga Ministry, said that the federal government recently invited the Peshmerga Ministry to discuss the security concerns in the disputed areas.
In the meeting, presided by Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi, the sides agreed to establish and activate different joint operations centers in Diyala, Kirkuk, Mosul, and Makhmour, Kamal revealed.
However, the decision to establish the centers was discussed earlier in 2020, but Baghdad was reluctant to put it into effect.
