ERBIL - Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Monday welcomed Iraqi Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi in Erbil where the premier underscored the importance of strengthening Iraq's democratic institutions.
Barzani and Halbousi, who is also the leader of the National Movement for Development and Reform, exchanged views on recent political and security affairs in the region, the prime minister's office said in a statement.
The meeting also comes ahead of the Iraqi parliamentary elections scheduled for October 10, 2021.
"Prime Minister Barzani underscored the importance of strengthening Iraq’s democratic institutions, which includes ensuring the conditions for free, fair, and credible elections and respect for the constitution as the basis on which outstanding disputes between the Kurdistan Region and the federal government should be resolved," reads the statement.
The pair additionally agreed that the Islamic State (IS) still remains a real threat in many parts of Iraq.
"The Prime Minister stressed the need for greater coordination between the Peshmerga forces and the Iraqi army, as well as the determination of a joint response in tackling the threat of terrorism."
