ERBIL — A roadside bomb blast hit the convoy of an Iraqi border guard commander on Thursday in the western province of Anbar, killing him and his driver.
A military source said the bombing had taken place on a highway near Ramadi, without disclosing further details.
Security forces have launched an investigation into the incident now, suspecting the attack to be carried out by the Islamic State (IS).
Anbar is among the Iraqi provinces which continues to suffer from the IS terrorist attacks after four years since its liberation from the extremist group.
Since the province borders Syria, it has become one of the hotbeds for IS sleeper cells and the militants who hide in the vast deserts of Anbar to plan attacks.
