ERBIL - The Iraqi army is making preparations for operations in the border areas in efforts to stop illegal activities and smuggling between the two countries, a report revealed on Wednesday.
The military campaign will be carried out in areas of Iraq's al-Qaim district and Syria's al-Tanaf-Albu Kamal in response to an increase in illegal activities, including smuggling of prohibited substances, a military source in the Al-Jazeera and Badia Operations Command in Al-Anbar province, told Shafaq News.
"The forces will conduct massive operations along the borders to track the illegal armed groups who transfer drugs, car parts, electricity, fuel, and medicine from Iraq to Syria," he said.
The Iraqi forces had managed to control the region through surveillance towers and night thermal cameras.
"Smuggling from Syria becomes a security and economic threat to Iraq."
