ERBIL - Iranian authorities on Wednesday extended the closure of Mehran border crossing with Iraq for tourists as part of protective coronavirus restrictions, an official said.
Speaking to Mehr News Agency, Ilam Governor Mohammed Nawzari pointed out that Mehran border crossing was closed for tourists on April 21 until May 6 amid the COVID-19 surge in the region.
However, trade movements will continue with official guidelines being followed.
This comes as the pandemic situation continues to worsen in Iraq where the COVID-19 tally on Wednesday surpassed 1,000,000.
Mehran border crossing is in Iran's Ilam province, bordering with Iraq's Wasit province, through which a great number of Iranian pilgrims visit Iraqi religious sites annually.
