ERBIL - A moderate earthquake on Tuesday evening rattled the border areas between the Kurdistan Region and Iranian Kurdistan, without any casualties reported.
The quake occurred near Iranian Kurdish city of Marivan, Kurdistan Province, but it was also measured at 5.3 on Richter scale in Sulaimaniya and Halabja provinces.
Penjwen Mayor Zana Abdulrahman confirmed the earthquake and pointed out that it only resulted in material damages.
The earthquake jolted 2 km north of Penjwen district, Sulaimaniya province.
Photos have gone viral on social media showing that the quake caused material damages to the public hospital and some other civilian houses in Penjwen.
The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) said in a statement that the earthquake occurred at 7:12 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10 km.
