Security Forces Apparently Foil Major IS Terrorist Attack in Kirkuk: Document

ERBIL — Security forces in Kirkuk, according to a leaked document, have reportedly thwarted a “major” terrorist attack planed by the Islamic State (IS).

Kirkuk Joint Operations on Monday issued a statement to urge people in the disputed Kurdish city to abide by the curfew after 9 pm as part of the effort to curb COVID-19 pandemic. However, a leaked document shows the plan was rather to carry out a counter-terrorism operation.

The document put all security forces in Kirkuk on high alert, saying that the IS jihadist were planning to attack Tasfirat Prison and Kirkuk Court.

According to the intelligence obtained by the Kirkuk Joint Operations, 14 IS militants in police uniforms were planning to drive on trucks rigged with explosives to carry out suicide operations outside the designated locations.

Over 1,000 prisoners, including IS militants, are said to be kept in Tasfirat Prison of Kirkuk.

The intelligence also indicated the possibility of a rocket attack in the civilian-populated areas prior to the main attacks, in order to spread panic among people and mislead the security forces.

However, according to media reports, the attacks were foiled with maximum security measures put in place on Monday night.
