Samarra: Hashd al-Shaabi Commander Killed in IS Attack

ERBIL - A pro-Iran Hashd al-Shaabi commander was killed in an attack by the Islamic State (IS) jihadists in Iraq's Samarra on Monday.

Hassan Mohammed Khalifa, Commander of the Brigade 314, and Rassim Hijami Sultan al-Hujami, a fighter in the Brigade 315, were killed while repelling the Islamic State attack.

Although the Islamic State was announced as "fully defeated" in Iraq in late 2017, the jihadist group has so far continued to pose a serious threat to the security forces and civilians in the country.

The group is mostly active in the territories disputed between Erbil and Baghdad where a security vacuum is present.
