ERBIL — Warplanes of the US-led Global Coalition over the course of 10 days destroyed scores of hideouts and caves used by the Islamic State (IS) militants in Qarachogh mountain of Makhmour, Spokesperson for Iraqi Commander in Chief Yehia Rasool, said.
Coalition Spokesperson Wayne Marotto also wrote on Twitter that 133 precision airstrikes were conducted in the area where 61 hideouts and 24 caves were destroyed.
According to the statement, a number of IS militants were killed during the raids, but the exact casualty figures were not revealed.
Qarachogh Mountain is located near Makhmour, some 60 kilometers southwest of Erbil. The area falls between the positions of the Peshmerga forces and the Iraqi Army.
A large number of IS militants are believed to have been hiding in those mountains since the extremist group has lost almost the entire territories it once held between 2014 and 2017.
