Kurdistan Welcomes Iraq's Designation of 6th March as National Day of Coexistence

ERBIL - Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani has welcomed Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi's designation of 6th March as the National Day of Tolerance and Coexistence.

Kadhimi announced in a Twitter statement earlier the day the designation of 6th March as the National Day of Tolerance and Coexistence in celebration of a historic meeting between Pope Francis and Iraq's top Shia cleric Ali Sistani on Saturday.

"I welcome Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi’s declaration of March 6 as the National Day of Tolerance and Coexistence, as the historic Papal visit continues in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region," Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani wrote on Twitter.

Pope Francis arrived in Baghdad on Friday afternoon where he was received by Prime Minister Kadhimi during an official ceremony. The Pontiff will also visit the Kurdistan Region on Sunday.

Speaking at Mar Yousif Cathedral in Baghdad on Saturday evening, the Pope said that this region is "the region of coexistence and diverse components" and that all diverse components and religions should be protected.
