ERBIL — Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday summoned the Iranian ambassador to the country to express concerns over the recent remarks made by Tehran envoy in Baghdad.
Iranian Ambassador to Iraq, Iraj Masjedi, recently criticized the Turkish operations inside Iraq against the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). He said Ankara has to respect Iraq’s sovereignty.
In response to the remarks, Turkish Ambassador to Iraq, Fatih Yildiz, said Iran was the last country to lecture Turkey about Iraq’s sovereignty.
Later, Mohammad Farazmand, Iranian Ambassador to Ankara, was summoned to the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs where he was explained that Ankara hoped Tehran will support the Turkish operations which, according to Turkey, was against a “terrorist organization”.
Turkey has recently stepped up its operations against the PKK on Kurdistan Region border strip. It sees the party as a “terrorist organization” that threatens the Turkish national security.
