ERBIL — Iraqi armed forces on Wednesday carried out an operation against the hideouts of the Islamic State (IS) in Diyala province, where they killed at least 20 militants, a local official told BasNews.
The operation was carried out by the Army and Federal Police forces near Tel Hama village of Diyala, Luis Khidhir, the mayor of Daquq, said.
“Twenty IS militants were hiding in a tunnel, and they were eliminated by the security forces,” Khidhir added.
Later on, according to the official, an IS-made explosive device went off and injured ten policemen and soldiers who are receiving medical treatment at the hospital now.
Earlier the day, Iraqi media reports said the country’s warplanes had heavily pounded the positions of IS near Sheikh Baba subdistrict of Jalawla (Gullala), north of Diyala province.
