ERBIL - As a result of an attack by the Islamic State (IS) insurgents on the Iraqi Federal Police forces in south of Kirkuk on Thursday night, at least five policemen were either killed or injured.
Daquq Mayor Lwiss Khizhir confirmed the report to BasNews and pointed out that the incident took place near the village of Arab Koy, in south of Kirkuk, where the jihadists targeted the federal police forces.
"As a result of this attack, three federal policemen were killed and two other policemen were wounded," Khizhir explained, adding that the police forces responded to the IS attack with the insurgents escaping the scene.
The attack comes as the jihadist group still poses a great threat in various areas in Iraq, especially in those territories disputed between Erbil and Baghdad where a security vacuum is seen.
The militant group is even active in the cities, including the capital Baghdad where at least 32 civilians were killed and more than 100 others were wounded after two IS suicide bombers blew themselves up in a busy marketplace in central Baghdad a few weeks ago.
