ERBIL - Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani on Tuesday sent a congratulatory message to the people of the autonomous region and "freedom" fighters on the 6th anniversary of Kobani liberation from the Islamic State (IS).
Barzani congratulated the people of Kurdistan Region, Peshmerga forces, and all other fighters who seek freedom for the world, adding that "we bow our heads before the pure souls of the martyrs, remembering them with respect and loyalty."
He also thanked the US-led Coalition forces for assisting the Kurdistan Region during the fight against the Islamic State (IS) in different times.
The jihadist group of Islamic State on September 15, 2014 besieged Kobani, a Kurdish town in north of Syria, and fierce clashes began with the local Kurdish fighters.
A few weeks later, the Kurdistan Region sent Peshmerga forces to Kobani to help the local fighters in liberating the town from the Islamic State.
