Iran Asks New US Administration to Lift Sanctions amid Fight against COVID-19

ERBIL — The Iranian government expects the Biden administration in Washington to lift the sanctions amid the global fight against the pandemic, an official from Tehran said.

During former US President Donald Trump’s administration, Washington abandoned the 2015’s Iran Nuclear Deal and re-imposed crippling sanctions on Tehran.

Iran says the sanctions have affected its fight against COVID-19, and that it faces obstacles to purchase food and medicine.

“Since [Biden’s] administration claims not to be anti-science like the previous one,” Iranian government spokesman Ali Rabiei said on Tuesday.

“One expects it to free the transfer of Iran’s own foreign exchange resources to fight the coronavirus and for health and food, and lift banking sanctions quickly,” he added.
