Iraq’s Population Surpasses 40 Million: Government

ERBIL — The population of Iraq has grown to over 40 million people in 2020, country’s ministry of planning said on Tuesday.

According to a statement from the ministry, the figures were determined based on international standards which estimate the population through world population growth, which was 2.6% for 2020.

The ministry added that the population of Iraq has reached 40,150,000, 50.5% of which are male and 49.5% are female.

The statement further reported that 56.5% of the population are between 15 and 64 years old; 40.4% are below 14 years old; and 3.1% are over 65 years old.

Iraq had previously planned a population census for 2020, which did not happen due to the pandemic and financial crises in the country.

The last census was held in 1997 in Iraq except for Kurdistan's three provinces of Sulaymaniyah, Erbil and Duhok.
