ERBIL - The United Kingdom has commended the role of Kurdistan Region's Peshmerga forces in defeating the Islamic State (IS) in the region.
Kurdish prominent leader and president of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), Masoud Barzani, received on Tuesday James Heappey, the UK's Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Armed Forces, in Erbil.
"Pleased to receive @JSHeappey, UK’s Minister for the Armed Forces today at the Barzani HQ," Barzani wrote on Twitter. "We discussed the latest developments and spoke of the significance of the defense cooperation between the Kurdistan Region and the United Kingdom."
Barzani's office said in a statement that Heappey hailed the role of the Peshmerga fighters in the fight against IS and stressed on UK's willingness to continue trainings to the Kurdish forces as part of the global coalition's mission in the region.
Barzani, who also served as the President of the Kurdistan Region previously, thanked the UK for its assistance to the Peshmerga forces during the anti-IS war, wishing for stronger relations between Erbil and London.
