ERBIL - Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu has expressed condolences over the passing of Kurdistan Region's Erbil Governor Firsat Sofi.
The Turkish minister offered condolences during a phone call with Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani on Thursday evening, a statement by Barzani's office has confirmed.
"He also extended his deep condolences to Dr. Sofi’s family and relatives and expressed his sympathy for them," the statement added.
"President Nechirvan Barzani thanked Turkey’s Foreign Minister for the phone call and his condolences."
The late governor of Erbil, Firsat Sofi, had been infected with the coronavirus, and he was flown to Turkey where he was taken under intensive care at a hospital in the capital Ankara.
However, the Kurdish governor lost his life due to the novel virus on Wednesday morning.
