ERBIL — At least one Iraqi soldier was killed in an improvised explosive device blast in a village near Sharaban district of Diyala.
The armed forces were patrolling the village of Khailana and its vicinity in pursuit of potential Islamic State (IS) presence, but they were targeted with an explosion, said Nihad Mohammed, a spokesperson for Diyala province.
The IED was placed inside a house, and it went off when the forces were searching the property.
A few days earlier, the IS jihadists carried out an attack on Khailana village and killed a tribal leader there. The Iraqi army is since carrying out regular patrols in the area.
