More US Support Expected as Peshmerga Ministry Working on Reform: Official

ERBIL - The US and International Coalition to combat the Islamic State (IS) would increase their military and logistics assistance to the Peshmerga forces, as the Ministry of Peshmerga is working on implementing reforms, an official said on Wednesday.

Speaking to BasNews, Babakir Faqe Ahmed, a Peshmerga Ministry official, pointed out that once the Unit 70 (for the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan) and Unit 80 (for the Kurdistan Democratic Party) unify, the United States will begin delivering the second batch of its assistance to the Peshmerga forces and start training the Kurdish fighters "based on the most modern military system."

He further noted that joint cooperation centers are expected to be opened between the Kurdistan Region's Peshmerga and Iraqi forces in the disputed areas soon.

The official added that they are waiting for a final meeting between Erbil and Baghdad to discuss the matter and specify the location of the joint centers.
