Sheikh Nawaf Appointed as Kuwait's New Emir

ERBIL - Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah has been appointed as the new Emir of Kuwait, a statement said.

The Kuwaiti Council of Ministers announced in a statement that Sheikh Nawaf is the successor of Emir Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah who passed away on Tuesday at a hospital in the US at the age of 91.

The new Emir was born on June 25, 1937, and he is the son of the tenth Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.

The father of four children, Sheikh Nawaf was named Crown Prince on February 7, 2006, and only 13 days later, his allegiance to the position was approved by the parliament.

He was appointed as Kuwait's Minister of Interior on July 13, 2003, while he became the first Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior on October 16, the same year.
