Iraq Cancels Turkish Defense Minister’s Visit over Deadly Drone Strike

ERBIL — Late on Tuesday, the Iraqi government cancelled the Turkish defense minister’s visit to Baghdad which was scheduled for Thursday.

The decision came hours after a Turkish drone strike killed two high-ranking Iraqi border guard officers in Sidakan area of Kurdistan Region, near the border with Iran and Turkey.

The airstrike also killed the driver of the two commanders, who were meeting with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) to ask them to leave the area.

Turkey is running an ongoing military operation in Kurdistan Region border areas against the PKK.

Meanwhile, Iraq’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned the Turkish ambassador in Baghdad to hand him “a strong protest note” over the airstrike.
