ERBIL — Erbil and Sulaymaniyah airports are not ready to resume international flights at the moment, said Kurdistan Region Interior Minister Rebar Ahmad.
Following a meeting with governors of Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, Duhok, and Halabja, with Health Minister Saman Barzanji in attendance, Ahmed told reporters that they have asked airports to conclude the preparations until 1st August for the resumption of international commercial flights.
Iraq’s Civil Aviation Authorities extended the flight ban last week until 22nd July. Reports said that the flights were likely to be resumed on 23rd this month.
The meeting between the Kurdish ministers and governors, which was dedicated to discussions on the current situation pertaining to the COVID-19 outbreak, also decided to relax the restrictions on movement between Erbil and Sulaymaniyah provinces.
Minister Ahmed said he has given governors more authority to issue travel permissions.
Concerning the movement between Kurdistan Region and Iraqi provinces, the minister said the restrictions remain in place for now.
