ERBIL — The Middle East media giant, MBC Group has condemned the Monday attack on its office in Iraq’s capital, calling for immediate investigations.
On Monday, hundreds of Iran-backed Hashd al-Shaabi sympathizers stormed the MBC office in Baghdad and smashed equipments to protest a report by the television channel in which, according to the protesters, labeled Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis as a terrorist.
Muhandis, a leader of Hashd al-Shaabi, was killed in January by a US airstrike near Baghdad airport which was originally targeting Qasim Suleimani, commander of Iran’s elite Quds Forces.
“MBC Group strongly condemns the deliberate attack that has targeted MBC IRAQ’s studios and offices in Baghdad today, which has resulted in severe damage to studio and office property,” MBC said in a statement.
“In terms of immediate action, MBC Group places the matter in the hands of the Iraqi authorities, trusting in its security protocols, as well as judicial process, in order to protect MBC IRAQ’s employees and the organisation, which operates in Iraq in accordance with the laws and regulations of the country,” it added.
MBC Group also said it hopes to receive full details of the circumstances of the attack at the earliest, and work with the authorities to hold the perpetrators accountable, as well as bring them to justice, in order to prevent similar attacks in the future.
Iraq’s Interior Ministry has already announced that an investigation is underway. It said in a statement that any outlawed aggression or behavior against the media or private and public properties are rejected.
